Relativism is taking over society, schools, nation

To the editor:

Whenever I read Matthew 4-8 – “Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”- I picture the person being tempted is a Washington politician. Of course the difference is that our Lord answered, “Jesus said to him, ‘Away from me, Satan! For it is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'”

We now have politicians who do not serve God. They serve the Devil, they promote abortion, euthanasia, gay marriage, embryo stem cell research, all the devil’s reasons.

And the pressure on religion has really manifested itself as the devil’s handiwork, Is there anyone in Washington who can say, “Away from me, Satan!”

During the 1960s President Lyndon B. Johnson’s administration declared an ostensible “war on poverty” with its Great Society programs. Johnson wanted to use the resources of the federal government to combat poverty. His was a progressive policy leading back to mimic the policies advanced by President Wilson, another who thought the government was better in deciding how you function than yourself.

In 1964, the national poverty rate was around 19 percent and falling, while the current poverty rate is expected to be around 15.1 percent and climbing. It is now at the highest level in nearly a decade. (Cato Institute)

According to the Cato report, the federal government will spend more than $668 billion to fight poverty in 2012. State and local governments will spend an additional $284 billion, amounting to $20,610 for every poor person in America, or $61,830 per poor family of three. As we can see we still have poverty. Add to this that these are not the accepted levels of poverty but often two, three or four times the poverty level are now the norm. That would then include almost half of the middle class. Is it the intent to reclassify our social classes into two categories, the rich and the poor, therefore destroying at least the concept of middle class? We would then be no different than that which the founders of this nation tried to avoid: The elite controlling government and the peasant whose only function is to serve and accept their position in life. How would that reflect the founders’ intent?

Contributions to the poverty level show from 1995 to 2000, the number of never-married mothers who went to work increased 40 percent. In 2010, 15.1 percent of all persons lived in poverty. The poverty rate in 2010 was the highest poverty rate since 1993. Between 1993 and 2000, the poverty rate fell each year, reaching 11.3 percent in 2000.

Another contributor to the debt has been the Supplemental Security Income program. It needs be made clear that this program, is simply a federal welfare program linked often with Medicaid, another welfare program. SSI has too been confused with Social Security Disability. In 1960 the average recipient could not work due to a stroke or heart condition. In 2012 the average recipient received money for backaches and other less than disabling maladies. Keep in mind also that the SSI recipient need not have worked or contributed one iota to be eligible for benefits while those applying for Social Security Disability needed to have contributed into Social Security, the so-called “locked box.”

Much of the increase in costs for government disability benefits is due to increases in the number of beneficiaries. Since 1990, the number of disabled-worker beneficiaries has increased 84 percent; disabled widow(er)s, 105 percent; and disabled adult children, 24 percent. In real terms, the average cost per beneficiary of all Social Security government cash benefits has increased 33 percent since 1970. Those who are really disadvantaged by this increase are those who worked, contributed all of their lives and now are faced with a higher cost of living without any real cost of living adjustment. They are left to wallow while those who may well be able to work, even if not in a physically laborious job, sit at home reaping in the benefits of the socialistic policies that are draining our economy.

The average cash benefit cost per disabled beneficiary has generally risen during the period 19702003, although the cost declined slightly in the early 1980s. (Social Security Administration)

As of September 2012, 47.7 million people were on food stamps

If you don’t want to work get a note from your doctor about your backache.

People in the United States are rapidly becoming an amoral socialistic society receiving handouts.

We are in a period of relativism which is the philosophical position that all points of view are equally valid, and that all truth is relative to the individual. This means that all moral positions, all religious systems, all art forms, all political movements and so on are truths that are relative to the individual.

Former Pope Benedict XVI stated the dictatorship of relativism does not recognize anything as definitive and whose ultimate standard consists solely of one’s own ego and desires.

Pera Marcello has analyzed it. The former president of the Italian Senate speaks about a “large-scale battle of secularism against Christianity.”

Relativism makes it much easier to kill babies, kill old people and be gay. Politically correct is part of relativism. And we certainly have politically correct politicians in Washington.

Relativism is invading our society, our economy, our schools, and our homes. Society cannot flourish nor survive in an environment where everyone does what is right in his own way.
