Ring in the new year responsibly – don’t drink and drive

As New Year’s Eve approaches tomorrow, we know that many of you out there will take time to celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of the next.

We also know that means alcohol will be the part of the plans of a significant number of people out there.

That’s all well and good, at least, until you try to drive somewhere while under the influence of alcohol. At that point, harmless fun literally becomes a matter of life and death, both for the driver and anyone who happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time while that person is behind the wheel.

We’ve seen far too often, both in our pages and elsewhere, the potential for driving while impaired has to ruin the lives of everyone involved.

We beg those of you who plan to indulge in some alcohol to please make a plan to stay home or get home safely. Designate a driver, call a taxi, stay overnight if you can — just don’t make the regrettable and selfish mistake of trying to drive yourself somewhere.

It’s not only grossly negligent and foolish, it’s also illegal. If you’re drinking, then driving, getting stopped by a cop before you wreck is about the best-case scenario.

We want everyone out there to have a happy new year, but we also want everyone to make it to see the sun rise on Jan. 1. Drunk drivers make that a whole lot less likely.

Please, for your sake and everyone else’s, celebrate the new year responsibly. Don’t drink and drive.
