Taliban cannot be allowed to regain Afghanistan
As we and other critics of President Barack Obama’s get-out-at-any-price policy in Afghanistan warned, it has emboldened Taliban extremists. They are scoring substantial successes against Afghan government troops – secure in the knowledge the White House is likely to do little, if anything, to stop them.
Allowing the Taliban to re-conquer Afghanistan would be a tragedy for that country’s people and a disaster for the rest of the world, too. Have we already forgotten Taliban atrocities and that their regime provided a safe haven for Osama bin Laden’s terrorists?
During a weekend visit to Afghanistan, U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., called for a reassessment of Obama’s schedule for withdrawing all American troops. They and other international forces are kept out of combat already, restricted to training Afghan soldiers.
McCain is right. Clearly, the Taliban believe the United States has given up on Afghanistan – leaving the door wide open to re-conquest. Again, that would have dangerous consequences for Americans.
