Mary E. Sunderland

Born Sept. 28, 1912, in Vira, she was a daughter of the late Elmer and Margaret (Fultz) Wyland. Her husband, Charles W. Sunderland, preceded her in death on April 21, 1944.

Surviving are: four children, Martha M. Sunderland of McVeytown, Shirley P. Kauffman and husband, Richard, of Lewistown, Dorothy M. Stryker and husband, Wallace, of McVeytown, Betty L. Grassmyer and husband, Gerald, of Mattawana; 12 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; 22 great- great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: a son-in-law, James E. Sunderland; two brothers, Charles and Paul Wyland and a granddaughter, Pamela Kauffman.

Early in life Mary took in laundry and worked in the school cafeteria at McVeytown. She later retired from L. Grief Brothers Manufacturing in Mt. Union.

She was a member of the Atkinson Mills United Methodist Church where she played the piano and taught Sunday School for many years.

Mary loved baking pies for her family.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, 2018, at the Atkinson Mills United Methodist Church, 3405 Ferguson Valley Rd., McVeytown, with Pastor Brian Myfelt officiating. Interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery.

A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2018, at Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 S. Market St., McVeytown; and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service Thursday at the church.
