BELLEVILLE – Clarence Alwine, 99, of Valley View Haven, Belleville, and formerly of Johnstown, died at 2:25 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2014, at the Haven.
Born March 19, 1915, in Conemaugh Township, he was a son of the late Romanus and Cassie (Berkey) Alwine. His first wife, Erma (Shetler) Alwine, preceded him in death on Oct. 6, 1949. His second wife, Turie (Kauffman) Alwine, whom he married June 1, 1952, preceded him in death on Feb. 25, 2007.
He is survived by: his children, Rhoda Dabbs and husband, Robert, of Hollsopple, Martha Lehman and husband, Glenn, of Johnstown, Melvin Alwine and wife, Cynthia, of Knoxville, Tenn., and Norma Alwine, of Johnstown; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Arlo Alwine and David Alwine, and a sister, Edith Eash.
In his early years, Clarence owned and operated a coal mining business. He later operated his own masonary business. He also was employed with Allensville Planing Mill, where he retired in 1980. While maintaining these businesses of his own, he also served as the pastor of the Headrick Mennonite church for 17 years.
Clarence was a member of the Barrville Mennonite Church, where he served as an elder as well as in various other voluntary positions. He and his wife, Turie, truly lived a life of service. They spent many years serving with the Mennonite Disaster Service all over the U.S.
He was an avid gardener and reader.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at Valley View Haven Chapel. Burial will take place at Kauffman Cemetery in Davidsville. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at Kauffman Mennonite Church in Davidsville, with Pastors Carl Geissinger and Ron Spory officiating.
A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Valley View Haven Chapel.
