James Oscar ‘Jamo’ Wian II

HARRISBURG – James Oscar “Jamo” “the World’s Best Golfer” Wian II, 87, of Carlisle, has played the final hole in this life March 17, 2014.

Don’t be sad or disheartened. Smile and rejoice for that’s the way Jamo would want it. What a character he was. What a character he was; goofy stories and the amazing feats of beating that stupid white ball down the perfectly manicured grass. The last reliable count of “quitting this Dumb Game” was in the neighborhood of 10,394 times.

Mr. Wian served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 and was stationed at Samar and Guam.

Jamo was born May 1, 1926, in Lewistown, and lived most of his adult life in Carlisle. He was named appropriately after his prankster and jester uncle. Following his namesake, he always found ways to have fun, make people laugh and entertain. Jamo’s father and uncles owned Wian’s Shoe Store in Lewistown where Jamo worked in his youth, and learned sales skills that became a foundation for his sales career with Breon and Certified Labs.

He was also known for remembering important details about peoples’ lives and events many years after and they would be amazed and touched that Jamo would recall them.

He graduated from Dickinson College in 1950, where he met and married Carrie Shuman Wian.

He was a life member of the Elks Club of Carlisle, and the Carlisle Country Club for more than 60 years where he played golf, gin rummy and poker. He also enjoyed skiing, traveling and spending time with his family and friends.

Jamo and Carrie had four children who all survive him, Leslie Ingalzo, of Hershey, Diane, of Annandale, Va., Jamie, of Carlisle, and Candi Joniak, of Wheaton, Ill. He is also survived by six granddaughters, Nancy, Jessica, Rachel, Sarah, Kelly and Kaitlyn and two great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank his many friends and care givers at Ecumenical Communities who became like family to him. As per Jamo’s wishes, there will be no services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
