Edward J. ‘Smitty’ Smith
MIFFLINTOWN – Edward J. “Smitty” Smith, 68, of Mifflintown, died Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at his home.
Born July 17, 1945, in Hendricks, Minn., he was a son of the late Joseph Edward and Erma Mae (Young) Smith.
His wife, Mabel Louise (Tabb) Smith, whom he married on Dec. 25, 1976, died on March 3, 2010.
He is survived by: one daughter, Amanda (Smith) Bowman and husband, Guy, of Mifflintown; and five brothers and three sisters: Bill Smith and wife, Dorie, Bob Smith and wife, Linda, Dee Anderson and husband, Doug, Colleen Patrick, Clem Smith, Tim Smith and wife, Simone, Terry Smith and wife, Toni, and Judy Smith.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Leroy Smith.
Ed graduated from Deubrook High School in White, S.D., in 1963.
He was in the U.S. Army a total of 20 years, serving in Germany, Korea, and Vietnam. He received many decorations during his service.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association, the American Legion and the Juniata County Sportsmen’s Club.
He enjoyed gardening, reading, putting puzzles together, hunting and fishing.
His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 10, 2014, at Guss Funeral Home Inc., 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown, with Pastor Bobby Landis officiating. Interment will be the Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown, where full military honors will be accorded by the Juniata County Veterans Council.
There will be a viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home.
