Merrill G. ‘Gene’ Metzger
RICHFIELD – Merrill G. “Gene” Metzger, 86, of Richfield (Evendale), died at 2:15 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, at his home.
Born on Dec. 10, 1927, in Lewistown, Mifflin County, he was a son of the late Merrill Metzger, Mildred (Zimmerman) Metzger-Reever and his stepfather, the late James Reever. On Nov. 25, 1950, he married his surviving wife, Orpha M. (Elsasser) Metzger, with whom he shared more than 63 years of marriage.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by: his son, Todd A. Metzger, of Waynesboro; and three brothers-in-law, Bill Elsasser, of Millerstown, Paul Elsasser, of Mount Pleasant Mills, and Kenneth Elsasser, of Richfield.
He was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Dean Elsasser and Charles “Chill” Elsasser, and two sisters-in-law, Arlene Devlin and Evelyn Zeiders.
Mr. Metzger was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, Cocolamus. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater.
He worked as a mason for many area contractors until retiring in 1990 from Vartan Construction Co., Harrisburg.
“Gene” loved to hunt and fish, but spending time with his family brought him his greatest joy.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, at St. John’s United Methodist Church, Cocolamus, with the Rev. Candace Arnold officiating. Interment will be held after the funeral service in the adjoining church cemetery, where full military burial honors will be accorded by the Juniata County Veterans Council.
There will be no viewing, however family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the church.
The family will provide all funeral flowers and kindly asks that memorial donations in Mr. Metzger’s memory be made to St. John’s United Methodist Church, c/o Vera Sierer, Treas., 106 Cheswyck Drive, McAlisterville, PA 17049.
