John D. Freed

EVENDALE – John D. Freed, 74, of Evendale, died at 11:10 a.m., on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

Born on July 10, 1939, in Port Trevorton, Snyder County, he was the son of the late Daniel J. and Ruth R. (Rohrer) Freed. On June 13, 1970, he married his surviving wife Susan M. (Ferster) Freed, of Evendale, with whom he shared nearly 43 years of marriage.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by: two sons, Kirk D. Freed and his wife, Renee, of McAlisterville, Jeremy P. Freed and his wife, Rebecca, of Port Royal; one sister, Joanne R. Dissinger and husband, Mervin, of Yardley; and he leaves behind five precious grandchildren, Carter, Daniel, Nathaniel, Emerson and Madyson Freed.

One sister, Carol A. Holtzapple preceded him in death.

John was a 1957 graduate of Greenwood High School, Millerstown and a 1961 graduate of Gettysburg College.

Mr. Freed was employed as a teacher by the Juniata County School District from 1961 until his retirement in 1998. During his tenure at the East Juniata High School, he coached many sports teams including Baseball, Soccer, Boys and Girls Basketball. He was also very involved with community sports teams such as the Richfield Youth Soccer and Little League baseball, McAlisterville Teener baseball and Men’s League baseball. For more than 25 years he served as Secretary for the West Branch Men’s Baseball League. In addition he also served on the committee for Boy Scout Troop 61, of Richfield.

John enjoyed many things like Penn State football, woodcarving, hunting, crossword puzzles and playing chess; but spending time with and attending his grandchildren events held a special place in his heart.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, from the Richfield Mennonite Church where he attended with Pastor Aaron Benner officiating. Interment will follow in the Richfield Union Cemetery.

A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, at the Richfield Mennonite Church and from 10 a.m. until the time of service Tuesday at the church.
