M. Doris Long

MIFFLINTOWN – M. Doris Long, 86, of Brookline Village, Mifflintown, and formerly of East Waterford, died at 1:35 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, at the Village.

Born on Feb. 5, 1927, in Turbett Township, Juniata County, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Mary Jane (Calhoun) Koons. On April 5, 1947, she married her husband, Raymond F. Long, with whom she shared nearly 49 years of marriage, before he preceded her in death on Jan. 21, 1996.

She is survived by: her sons, Robert R. Long and his wife, Debra, of Mechanicsburg, and Dennis A. Long and his wife, Belinda, of East Waterford; and three grandchildren, Matthew Long, Kristen Long-Puleo and her husband, Tony, and Kelsey Long.

She was the last of her generation, having been preceded in death by three brothers, Bill Koons, Wayne Koons and Harold “Buck” Koons and three sisters, Alma Elizabeth Clark, Viola “Polly” Swartz and Margaret Wentzel.

Mrs. Long was a member of the East Waterford United Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the adult Sunday school class and the church’s Pollyanna group. Mrs. Long also belonged to the East Waterford Fire Company and was a charter member of the East Waterford Fire Company Auxiliary that was established on Sept. 13, 1948.

From 1958 until 1987, Doris and her late husband owned and operated R.F. Long’s General Merchandise in East Waterford until entrusting the business to their son, Dennis.

Doris had a gift for baking, loved watching the Lawrence Welk Show and enjoyed going to all of the area’s festivals with her husband. Since 2001, she was a cancer survivor who cherished each additional day she had with her family.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, at the East Waterford United Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. John C. Park officiating. Interment will follow in the East Waterford Cemetery.

The viewing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013, at the church.
