Thelma A. (Hoffman) Vandegrift

MIFFLINTOWN – Thelma A. (Hoffman) Vandegrift, 85, of Mifflintown, formerly of McAlisterville, entered into rest on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, at the Brookline Manor.

She was the wife of the late Harry Umstead Vandegrift Jr., who preceded her in death on July 17, 1991.

Thelma was born on Aug. 23, 1928, in Cocolamus, a daughter of the late Harry E. and Ruth V. (Strawser) Hoffman. She was a graduate of Mount Airy School for the Deaf. After graduation she assisted her parents on the family farm and later married and moved to Coatesville, returning to McAlisterville in 1989. Thelma was a lifetime member of the Bunkertown Church of the Brethren, McAlisterville. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed embroidering, and spending time with family and friends.

Thelma is survived by: her brother Roy E. Hoffman and wife, Loretta M., of Richfield, a sister Nina Kay Graybill and her husband, Samuel, of Richfield; five nieces and nephews: Barry Hoffman and his wife, Judy, Rodney Hoffman and his wife, Judy, Audrey Conrad and her husband, Mike, Tina Shirk and her husband, Mike, and Joan Hassinger and her husband, Steve; 13 great nieces and nephews; and 11 great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: a brother, Park Hoffman his wife, Thelma; a great-great nephew; and her late mother’s cousins, with whom she was raised, Olive Kratzer and Twila Fiedler.

Friends and family are invited to the viewing from 1 to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, at Bunkertown Church of the Brethren, 52 Bunkertown Road, McAlisterville. The funeral will follow the viewing, with Pastor Gregory Jones officiating. Burial will be made in Goodwill Cemetery, Bunkertown.
