Phyllis W. Harpster

BELLEVILLE – Phyllis W. Harpster, 85, died at 7:36 a.m., Friday, Sept. 20, 2013 at Valley View Haven in Belleville.

She was a long time resident of Zephyrhills, Flor., with a Lewistown, summer home at 212 Cider Lane.

Born April 2, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Gladys (Shivery) Weaver.

Phyllis is survived by husband Norman R. Harpster, Sr. whom she married in 1950. She is also survived by her son, Norman R. “Chip” Harpster, Jr. and wife. Diane, of Bethlehem; two granddaughters, Amy and Lauren Harpster; and a sister, Joanne Thomson and husband Kenneth of Hollidaysburg.

Phyllis was a graduate of Lewistown High School, Class of 1946. She was also a 1950 graduate of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA with a B.S. degree in Chemistry. Following graduation, she worked for a short time the Marcus Hook Viscose Research Laboratory.

Over the next 36 years, she lived for various periods of time, depending on her husband’s employment assignments in Baltimore, MD, at several locations in the Pittsburgh area and Titusville; after his retirement they relocated to Florida.

Phyllis was a very interesting in person with many close friends in PA, as well as many other states.

She had been an avid golfer for many years in the various places she lived. Also, when she lived in Florida, she was a member of the Red Hats Society, Swim Club, etc. at Betmar as well as the senior swim instructor at the local Y.M.C.A..

Travelling was also of interest and she visited England, Scotland, France, Germany and Italy. She had the good fortune to be in France with all the family for the 50th D-Day Anniversary.

She was confirmed and belonged to St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and attended the Atonement Lutheran Church in Florida.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 120 N. Main Street with Rev. Gary Roth officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park.

Her family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main Street, Lewistown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Phyllis’s memory can be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 120 N. Main Street, Lewistown, PA 17044.
