Robert J. ‘Bob’ Bruce
MIFFLINTOWN- Robert J. “Bob” Bruce, 87, formerly of Walnut, passed away on Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, at the Bridges at Brookline, Mifflintown.
Born June 2, 1926, in Avoca, he was a son of the late Edwin and Mary (Farrell) Bruce. His wife, Helen C. (Reynolds) Bruce, whom he married Sept. 15, 1951, died on April 15, 1997.
He is survived by: eight children, Barbara Eckard and husband, Hayes, Jr., Mary Mertz, Robert M. Bruce and wife, Pam, and Janet Danner and husband, Robert, all of Mifflintown, Edwin J. Bruce, of Port Royal, John S. Bruce and wife, Coletta, of Vancouver, Wash., Susan Brower and husband, Mark, of Clearfield, and Phillip W. Bruce and wife, Beth, of Concord, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; five great- grandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by: an infant daughter, Jean L. Bruce; one grandson, William David; one granddaughter, Emma Brower; one son-in-law, Mick Dillman; two brothers; and four sisters.
Bob served in the United States Navy from April 1943 to January 1946 and in the United States Army from February 1946 to January 1972, retiring from military service in January 1972 after 28 years. Stationed at many posts all over the world, he served in the South Pacific during World War II, with the Second Infantry Division during the Korean Conflict, and with the First Infantry Division and Headquarters 1st Signal Company during Vietnam. He was awarded two bronze stars for meritorious achievement in Vietnam and attended many Vietnam veterans reunions.
After retiring, he was the manager, a member, and a past commander of American Legion Post 298, the manager and a member of VFW Post 5863 and was active with the Juniata County Veterans Council as long as he was able.
He attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Nook.
Bob enjoyed long walks, reading, being with people and was always willing to help his friends and family. He loved his children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren and his family was very important to him.
His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 27, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 15275 state Route 35 South, Mifflin, with the Rev. Charles L. Hershberger officiating. Interment will be in St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, Nook, where full military honors will be accorded by the Juniata County Veterans Council.
There will be a viewing from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, at Guss Funeral Home, Inc., 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown. There will not be a viewing at the church.
