Martha Jane (Powell) Switzer

MIFFLINTOWN – Martha Jane Powell Switzer, 92, of Mifflintown, mother of Sally Switzer, of Voorhees, N.J., Jim Switzer, of Mifflintown, and Brenda M. Switzer Maier, of Manlius, N.Y., has gone to be with the Lord. On Aug. 29, 2013, she passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her three children and friends.

She married S. Carl Switzer, who passed away on Dec. 3, 1990. Born on March 1, 1921, to Beulah Mae (Stine) Powell and Perry L. “Mr. Viscose” Powell, of Lewistown. Jane was a sister to Sarah Boxe, Perry Powell, Preston Powell and Harold Powell, who all preceded her in death.

She is survived by: her brother, Jay Powell, and his wife, Coe, of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; daughter-in-law, Lindy (Baer) Switzer; granddaughters, Chelsie Switzer Poff and her husband, Dustin, Natalie Switzer Maier; and great-granddaughters, Layla and Lilly Poff.

Jane was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Mifflintown.

Known to many for her kindness and huge capacity to love, she leaves behind many friends, young and old. An extraordinary homemaker, she also, along with her late husband, Carl, owned and operated Switzer Chevrolet & Oldsmobile, Mifflintown. Jane enjoyed music from an early age and sang with the Alfarata Children’s Choir. Her love of sewing, knitting and crochet benefited many throughout the years. Known for her smile and kindness, she gave selflessly to anyone in need. Before marriage, Jane was a lab technician at the American Viscose Corporation. She always loved the adventure of traveling, whether by car, train, ship or plane. She enjoyed visiting new destinations and returning to families and favorite places.

The family would like to thank the many neighbors, friends and caregivers who enriched her life.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, from the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown. Interment will be in the Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown.

Viewing will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the funeral home.
