Leonard R. Zellers
THOMPSONTOWN – Leonard R. Zellers, 85, of Thompsontown, died at 9:40 p.m. Sunday, June 23, 2013, at Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin.
Born on Nov. 28, 1927, in Enola, Cumberland County, he was a son of the late William L. and Emma R. (Shadle) Zellers. On Dec. 16, 1950, he married his surviving wife, Virginia (Zaring) Zellers, with whom he spent more than 62 years of marriage.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by: his daughters, Elaine Z. Amey and her husband, Ed, of Thompsontown, and Rebecca Spencer and her husband, David, of New Columbia; three grandsons, David B. Spencer, Anthony E. Spencer and Matthew R. Spencer; and he leaves behind five great- grandchildren.
Mr. Zellers was a 1946 graduate of Sunbury High School and proudly served his country as a sergeant in the United States Army. He was a member of Liverpool United Methodist Church, Newport Social Order of Owls, and the Newport Lodge 381 F&AM.
Following his military service, he worked at the Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Harrisburg, and later at S&S Chevrolet, Thompsontown, after which he owned and operated Zeller’s Gulf Station, Newport, for 25 years.
Leonard enjoyed fishing, gardening, animals and going to the beach.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 27, 2013, at Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 111 Westfall St., McAlisterville, with the Rev. Paul Kauffman officiating. Interment will be in St. John (Barner’s) Cemetery, Liverpool. Full military burial honors will be accorded by the Juniata County Veterans Council.
A viewing will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of service Thursday, at the funeral home.
