Richard ‘Dick’ L. Rhoades
LEWISTOWN – Richard “Dick” L. Rhoades, 71, of Lewistown, died at 2 a.m. Thursday, May 2, 2013, at his residence.
Born on Jan. 18, 1942, in New Bloomfield, he was a son of the late Stanley M. and Jean E. (Hawke) Rhoades.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Lorrie Ann, and a sister, Patricia Elliott.
He is survived by: his children, Richard L. Rhoades Jr. and wife, Marci, and Lisa Dobbs, all of Lewistown; six grandchildren, Dani, Jake and Mia Rhoades, and Sam, Noah and Wyatt Dobbs; sister, Cindy Porch and husband, Ed; and brother, Mike Rhoades and wife, Becky, all of Lewistown.
Richard was a 1959 graduate of Lewistown High School.
He was in the Marine Corps from 1959 to 1972. Richard was honorably discharged as a staff sargent of Marines. He received the Good Conduct Medal, third award, Vietnam Service Medal with four stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Action Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Combat Action Ribbon, Bronze Star and Air Medal with three stars.
He worked at Standard Steel and then later, retired as a self-employed truck driver.
Earlier in life, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, and more recently, spending time with family, especially his grandchildren.
He touched many lives. Dick shared Marine experiences with a special group called “Marine Moms.” This group of ladies would have monthly breakfast outings and chat about life as a Marine and what their Marine sons or daughters may be experiencing. These women and their children were very special to him.
He will be buried with military honors in Arlington National Cemetery, alongside his daughter, Lorrie Ann.
