Jean M. Speck Houseal

MECHANICSBURG – Jean M. Speck Houseal, 83, of Mechanicsburg and formerly of Harrisburg, passed away on Friday, May 3, 2013, at Harrisburg Hospital.

Born in Decatur Township, Mifflin County, she was a daughter of the late Reed and Roxie (Bowersox) Spigelmyer.

She was a graduate of Lewistown High School and retired from the Senate of Pennsylvania as an administrative assistant.

In her faithful service as a charter member of the Penbrook United Church of Christ, she served in many capacities including organist, choir director, deacon and elder.

She was a member of the Hannah Penn Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association and volunteered as a teaching assistant for multiple elementary schools in the Harrisburg School District.

An avid reader, Jean spent nearly 25 years volunteering at the Kline Village Library, resulting in her being named volunteer of the year in 2008. She also served on the Friends of Kline Village board.

Jean was the widow of Richard L. Houseal, who died in 1993. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Baker, and a brother, Guy Spigelmyer.

Surviving her are: daughter, Linda K. Houseal, of Harrisburg; sons, Ernie (Martha) Speck and Rick (Janis Lindenberger) Houseal, both of Mechanicsburg; grandchildren, Teresa (Speck) McDaniel, of Harborcreek, Joshua L. Houseal and James Lindenberger, both of Mechanicsburg; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to a visitation at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 9, 2013, with a memorial service to be held at 11 a.m. at Penbrook United Church of Christ, 56 Banks St., Penbrook, with Dr. Robert Stoudt officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Jean’s church’s memorial fund addressed above.
