Brenda J. Swigart
McVEYTOWN – Brenda J. Swigart, 69, of Ferguson Valley Road, McVeytown, went to be with the Lord Monday morning, May 13, 2013, at her home.
Born Oct. 12, 1943, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Helen Spickler, of McVeytown. Brenda was also preceded in death by: a son, Patrick Swigart; a brother, Keith Spickler; and a sister, Linda Fisher.
Surviving are: her husband of 53 years, James E. Swigart; five children, Jamie Sweitzer and husband, Richard, of McVeytown, Connie Stimely and husband, Crist, of McVeytown, Carol Swigart, of Huntingdon, Paula Donahey and husband, Michael, of Belleville, and Rodney Swigart and wife, Karen, of McVeytown; two brothers, Ron Spickler and wife, Betty Lou, of McVeytown, and Sheldon Spickler, of McVeytown; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Brenda’s greatest loves were spending time with her grandchildren and working in her flower gardens. She loved going to yard sales in the summer and finding a good bargain.
She retired from Owen’s Corning Fiberglass, now AGY, after 33 years.
While there, she frequently helped raise money for United Way and catered many holiday parties. She treasured her years there and the many friendships she made.
In addition to raising six children of her own, Brenda opened her home to many foreign exchange students: Silvio, from Brazil; Feije, from Holland; Urs, from Switzerland; Alvaro, from Mexico; and Soren, Jan and Alex, from Germany.
She loved planning trips and traveling to the beach, Florida and Branson, Mo., cruising the Caribbean and visiting some of the exchange students to see their home countries and meet their families.
Brenda was a member of Spring Run Church of the Brethren in McVeytown, where she was very active in creating entertainment for Bible school, birthday socials, and Mother’s and Father’s Day programs. She also participated in a host/ exchange trip with area churches to Germany.
A service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, May 17, 2013, at Spring Run Church of the Brethren, with Pastors Craig and Kate Gandy officiating.
A viewing will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, at the church.
