Verna L. Landis

MIFFLINTOWN – Verna L. Landis, 82, of Mifflintown, died at 8:25 p.m. Friday, March 8, 2013, at Bridges at Brookline, Mifflintown.

Born on Sept. 27, 1930, in Spruce Hill Township, Juniata County, she was a daughter of the late Frank W. and Viola (Clark) Swartz. On June 25, 1949, she married her surviving husband, Lynn E. Landis, with whom she shared nearly 64 years of marriage.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by: three brothers, Kenneth Swartz and his wife, Evelyn, of Mexico, Pa., James Swartz and his wife, Betty, of Port Royal, and Richard Swartz and his wife, Faye, of Chambersburg; one sister, Francie Kepner and her husband, Earl, of Belleville; and she leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

One brother, Robert Swartz, and two sisters, Nellie Crawford and Kathryn Martz, preceded her in death.

She was a 1948 graduate of Juniata Joint High School, Mifflintown, and a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Mifflintown, as well as the Juniata County Business and Professional Women, where she was honored as their 1977-78 Woman of the Year.

In earlier life, Mrs. Landis worked for Bell Telephone and later served as Attorney John Welsh’s secretary, in Mifflintown, for more than 40 years before retiring from Attorney John Mort’s office.

Verna loved the outdoors and enjoyed gardening, especially raising her prized Stargazer Lilies and going to Myrtle Beach, S.C.. and Ocean City, Md.; however, her greatest joy came from spending time with her precious nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown, with the Rev. James B. Wooster Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Adams Cemetery, Mifflintown.

There will be no viewing; however, the family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of the service Wednesday, at the funeral home.

The family will provide all funeral flowers and kindly asks that memorial donations in Mrs. Landis’ memory be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
