Richard L. ‘Dick’ Beightol
REEDSVILLE – Richard L. “Dick” Beightol, 90, of Reedsville, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, at the Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College.
Born on Dec. 9, 1922, in Howard, he was a son of the late George W. and Susan Beightol. On June 6, 1981, in Lewistown, he married A. Jane Garvey, who survives at home.
Dick is survived by: his wife of 31 years; two sons. Steven M. Beightol and Eric A. Beightol, both of Reedsville; one nephew; and several nieces.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers.
Dick served during World War II in the 271st Artillery Battalion of the U.S. Army. For his years of service, he received the Good Conduct Medal, Philippines Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with four Bronze Stars, and one Bronze Arrowhead.
Dick attended the Howard High School and was of the Methodist faith.
Dick worked at Cerro Metals of Bellefonte, retiring in 1984 after 39 years of service.
In his earlier days, Dick loved and owned several horses. His second occupation was a ferrier, shoeing many horses throughout the central Pennsylvania region. He enjoyed his boat and spent many Sunday afternoons leading water skiers. In 1972, he used his boat to rescue many flood victims from their homes. He was a volunteer fire fighter for the Howard Fire Company.
Dick was an avid gardener and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He would attend fox hunting events with his fox hounds, but more recently, he hunted with his four beagles.
He enjoyed Penn State Football and was a gate attendant for more than 30 years. He attended many of their bowl games. He likes to travel and was a lifetime member of the Howard VFW. Dick would attend social activities at the Derry Township Senior Center and the First United Methodist Church, in Lewistown.
Friends will be received from 1 to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at the Kader-Neff Funeral Home, 135 W. Main St., Howard, PA 16841.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Roz Mason officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at Schencks Cemetery, Howard Township.
