R. Scott Matthews

PRAY, Mont. – R. Scott Matthews, 53, completed his journey on earth Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at his home in Pray, Montana.

He was born May 2, 1959, in Lewistown, the oldest son of the late Raymond E. Matthews and the late Helen E. (Joe) Marker Flickinger.

Scott was a 1977 graduate of Chief Logan High School and attended Shippensburg University. He left Lewistown in 1988 to follow his dream in Paradise Valley, Montana. He was employed at Chico Hot Springs Resort. He was a lifetime member of Trout Unlimited and the NRA.

Like his father, he was a history buff. He loved books, writing and music. Scott enjoyed the outdoors, camping and floating the Yellowstone River. He was an avid fly fisherman. He told great stories and will be remembered for his contagious laugh.

Scott is survived by: Lyda, his loving wife of 20 years; son Phillip D. Lear, of Missoula, Mont.; stepmother, Sandra Wertz Matthews, of Lewistown; and two brothers and their families, Craig, Kim, Cale and Sophie, of Lewistown, and Todd, Chris, Nate and Jake, of Sunbury. There are many surviving aunts, uncles and cousins in both the Matthews and Marker families.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the people who cared for Scott in his final weeks, Livingston Hospice Care, 504 S. 13th St., Livingston, MT 59047, or to the group Scott respected for taking such good care of his father and family, The ALS Association, 321 Norristown Road Suite 260, Ambler, PA 19002, noting Hershey Team Walk, Sandra Matthews, in memory of Scott.

A memorial gathering will be held in Lewistown in the near future.
