Walter C. ‘Pete’ Hoke

McVEYTOWN – Walter C. “Pete” Hoke, 88, of McVeytown, went from this earthly life into the arms of Jesus at 6:25 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013.

Born June 4, 1924, in Harrisburg, he was a son of the late William G. and Anna Josephine (Coffman) Hoke. His first wife, Mary Lou (Erdman) Hoke, preceded him in death on April 18, 1976. His second wife, Claire G. (Nelson) Hoke, whom he married March 17, 1977, survives.

Also surviving are: three children, Jeffrey S. Hoke and wife, Trudy, of Mifflintown, Becky L. Bomberger and husband, Michael, of Mechanicsburg, and Sherida S. Helsley, of New Ringgold; five grandchildren, Lisa Treaster and husband Rickey, of Richfield, Joseph Hoke and companion, Deb Pecht, of Mifflintown, Heidi Johnson and husband, Dwayne, of Alexandria, Va., Robert Helsley III and wife, AnnMarie, of New Ringgold, and Tanya Gross and husband, Max, of Divide, Colo.; 12 great- grandchildren; and two very special friends, Charles Jr. and Susan Heckman, of McVeytown.

He was preceded in death by: two brothers, Paul and L. Samuel Hoke; two sisters, Anna Mae Christner Kohler and Nellie V. Dodson; and a grandson, Michael S. Hoke.

A 1942 graduate of William Penn High School in Harrisburg, he was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army Air Corps in the European Theatre. He served as a radioman and gunner, flying in B-24s out of England. He attained the rank of staff sergeant.

Early in life, he worked in the agriculture industry as an artificial breeder, milk tester and dairy herdsman. He later did factory work and was employed as a security guard, warehouseman and computer programmer at New Cumberland Army Depot, retiring in 1980.

Pete was a member of the Wayne United Methodist Church, McVeytown, and volunteered at Lewistown Hospital for many years.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at the Wayne United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Phillip May officiating. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Elizabethville.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, at Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 S. Market St., McVeytown, and from noon until the time of service, Wednesday, at the church.
