Pastor hopes for more community involvement

MIFFLINTOWN — A new pastor at New Life Assembly Church of God hopes to make the church the focal point of the community.

Pastor Jeffrey Henry’s first service was Dec. 2 and has already broadened the church’s online presence, by beginning to add a website and social media pages.

“Our goal is for New Life to be the community church. We want it to be the place for people to come and feel welcomed and loved.”

Henry looks forward to his first big service, Christmas Eve in Mifflintown, at 6 p.m. Dec. 24.

There will be cocoa, cookies and Christmas carols sung acappella.

“We’re looking forward to having a great Christmas Eve service and getting to know people in the community.”

Henry comes to Mifflintown from the Philadelphia area, where he served for 12 years at Cornerstone Christian Fellowship in Abington.

Prior to that, he was a youth pastor, then an associate pastor at Cornerstone Christian Fellowship.

Henry is continuing a line of individuals who have worked in ministry. His uncle and step grandfather were a Quaker ministers and his father was schooled as a minister, he said.

While Henry describes himself as an “urban guy,” having spent most of his life in a city, he is not unfamiliar with a rural setting.

“My grandparents were farmers out in Ohio,” he said. “I’m sure it will take awhile to get used to the slower pace, but we’re excited to get a fresh new start and become part of the community.”

Henry has been a volunteer fireman in Glenside for 25 years, and is considering joining the local volunteer fire company once he gets settled.

“It has always been a passion of mine. I started when I was 16 years old,” he said.

Henry is currently commuting to Mifflintown on weekends, but hopes to be moved in with his wife, Jodie, and their 12-year-old Chihuahua, Rocky, by January. He also has a daughter, Eva, who is currently a student at the University of Valley Forge.

Services at New Life Assembly Church of God are held 10:30 a.m. Sundays, at 1578 Cedar Springs Road, Mifflintown.
