Island Grove camp to open season Aug. 1
MEXICO, Pa. – Island Grove Campmeeting, in Mexico, Pa., will open its 118th season with a traditional communion service at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 1.
Island Grove was founded in 1897 in Tuscarora and moved to its present location in Mexico in 1904. The camp became the property of the Evangelical United Brethren Church in 1946, according to a press release.
The release states the EUB and Methodist Church merged in 1968 to form the United Methodist Church. When the UMC decided to drop small campgrounds, Island Grove became a part of the Island Grove Campground Association.
A service dedicated to missions is set for Aug. 2. This year, representatives from Juniata Mennonite School will talk about their mission trip to Jamaica.
Campers are encouraged to attend Sunday morning worship services at churches in surrounding communities. An ice cream social and fun fair will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 3.
Sunday evening services begin at 7:30 p.m. with a guest speaker, the Rev. Randy Traxler. Traxler has been the pastor of Lake Park United Methodist Church in Lewistown for the past four years. He and his wife, Amy, have two sons, Seth and Patrick. He also is the Pastor-Spiritual Care Coordinator for Asera Care Hospice, the release states.
Adult Bible studies will be held at 10 a.m. Monday through Friday in the Boarding House. Teen Time and Children’s Service will be held at the same times in the tabernacle.
There are electric hookups for campers, places to tent and rooms to rent, the release states. There are outdoor showers and a playground.
