Group discusses transportation projects update

LEWISTOWN — The Mifflin County Planning Commission met Thursday to discuss some projects the community could see happening in the near future.

After Commission Chair Kay Semler called the meeting to order, Bill Gomes, director of Mifflin County Planning and Development, introduced speaker Tom Zurat Jr., assistant district executive-design for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, who delivered the annual transportation update.

Zurat highlighted a new high speed connection that will link I-80 and I-99 near State College. The plan is to take out the east and westbound ramps on I-80 and replace them with this new system. The project will reportedly help save travelers time on their trips and also help the flow of tractor trailers that come through the area.

Zurat also discussed work that is being done in Mifflin County. PennDot is currently focusing on 11 SD bridges in the region — out of the 11, PennDot is working on six, either doing a repair or updating in different areas.

In Lewistown, PennDot is looking to complete a few minor projects that will take place in the next couple years, such as updating road signs and a possible road reconstruction on Valley Street.

Additionally, Zurat laid the ground work for plans beginning in 2020. Zurat said plans include a paving roadway project on US 22 Business, the addition of new sidewalks and crosswalks and some new drainage and piping in the area.

The meeting wrapped up with Jim Lettiere going over the Subdivision and Land Development Review Committee Report. The report highlighted 11 township ordinances, 10 municipal and one county ordinance.

An ordinance to change the property line between the land of Douglas D. Rittenhouse and Angela K. Beckenbaugh and the land of Kenneth Walters in Wayne Township was later approved. The other 10 were reviewed for possible updates and recommendations by the planning commission.

The Mifflin County Planning Commission meets at 3:30 p.m. at the end of each month at the Mifflin County Courthouse.
