Storm hits area Friday

Widespread power outages reported

LEWISTOWN — Approximately 3,000 residences were left without power following a storm that passed through Mifflin County on Friday evening.

According to Phil Lucas, director of Mifflin County Emergency Services, the region experienced widespread power outages beginning at approximately 8 p.m. on Friday evening. Residences in central Granville Township, Lewistown Borough and parts of Derry Township were affected by the storm.

Lucas noted that the storm came from the south and knocked down several trees, however the primary cause for the outages was due to a substation issue. Some residences were reportedly left without power for approximately eight hours, but power was restored to most homes by Saturday evening.

Lucas also reported that there were no injuries or entrapments that resulted from Friday’s storm. Additionally, while the National Weather Service confirmed tornadoes both areas of Huntingdon and Juniata counties, no tornado activity was confirmed in Mifflin County as of press time Monday.
