MCCF inmate charged with 2 counts aggravated assault

LEWISTOWN — A Richfield man, incarcerated at Mifflin County Correctional Facility, was charged Monday with two counts aggravated assault after punching and choking two corrections officers, court documents indicate.

Documents state that Kylar Carvell, 22, kicked his MCCF cell door early Monday morning and refused to allow his cellmate to exit the cell, prompting officers to subdue Carvell with pepper spray and move him to a cell in the restricted housing unit. Later in the morning, two officers assisted Carvell with changing his clothes and cleaning up when Carvell reportedly punched one of the officers, striking the guard’s eye and ear, court documents indicate. Documents also state that Carvell wrapped his left arm around the neck of another officer before correctional staff members were able to subdue him.

Police reported they observed redness on the first officer’s ear and a slight swelling under the officer’s eye, as well as redness on the left side of the other officer’s neck. Additionally, video surveillance reportedly showed Carvell assaulting both officers.

Carvell’s bail was set at $100,000 by Magisterial District Judge Kent Smith and a preliminary hearing is scheduled in Mifflin County Central Court on April 24.
