39-year-old man charged with fleeing, eluding police

PORT ROYAL — A 39-year-old man, charged in March with one felony count fleeing/eluding police after driving in excess of 90 miles per hour during a police chase, was apprehended and arraigned on Thursday.

According to court documents, a Pennsylvania State Police trooper observed Earl W. Bruce Jr., of Mifflintown, operating a vehicle in Port Royal Borough on March 18. Bruce was known by PSP to have multiple warrants for his arrest and his driving privileges were suspended. When the trooper observed Bruce turn onto Market Street without using a turn signal, the trooper activated his vehicle emergency lights and siren, to which Bruce responded by accelerating, court documents state.

Bruce reportedly traveled in excess of 90 miles per hour in a 25 mph zone and he reached the same speeds on state Route 75 South. He also did not stop at each intersection along Market Street, nor did he stop at a posted stop sign, when he turned onto 6th Street from Market Street. PSP later observed Bruce leaving his correct lane of travel without using his turn signal while he passed a vehicle on a hill and two other vehicles in a no-passing zone.

Bruce was charged with one third-degree felony and 25 summary traffic offenses, according to court documents. Documents state that bail was set at $50,000 by Magisterial District Judge Jacqueline Leister and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 18. Bruce was committed to Mifflin County Correctional Facility, unable to post the bail set.
