Local man charged with statutory sexual assault
NEWPORT — A Lewistown man was charged on Wednesday with five criminal counts in Perry County for reportedly performing sexual acts with a 14-year-old accuser, court documents state.
Documents state that 29-year-old Zachary L. Sassman visited the accuser in Newport on Tuesday night and engaged in various sexual activities with the individual. Sassman reportedly knew the accuser was 14-years-old prior to the two of them engaging in sexual activities and admitted as much to police.
Sassman was charged with three felonies, including statutory sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault of a minor and unlawful, sexual contact with a minor, as well as one misdemeanor count corruption of minors and one misdemeanor count indecent assault of a minor. Magisterial District Judge Michael Schechterly set bail at $50,000 unsecured during a preliminary arraignment and Sassman is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on April 5.
