Local fire companies looking to consolidate
YEAGERTOWN–Ed Mann, Chief of East Derry Fire Co., informed the Derry Township supervisors of plans to consolidate local fire companies on Monday night at the Derry Township Municipal Building.
According to Mann, East Derry and Highland Park fire companies are currently pursuing the consolidation, with the potential for other companies to join in the future. Mann noted that he will discuss the project with Burnham Township, in order to gauge their interest in consolidation and answer questions.
“At some point we will need a letter from the [township] supervisors once we know who all the players are…to approve the consolidation” Mann said.
Mann also stated that if approved, the consolidated company will remain at two separate locations, but will have one chief and operate as a single company. In order for the merger to come to fruition, the project requires approval from the township supervisors, approval from the attorney general’s office and it must go through orphans’ court.
“One of the organizations will remain as the surviving organization, everything will be folded into the surviving organization. After the orphans court approves the merger, then we’ll file with the Department of State for a name change,” Mann concluded.
Following dicussion, the board thanked Mann for sharing the merger plans and for providing a new way to become more financially efficient.
