Elementary school student left on bus

Pupil safe after found by passerby

BURNHAM — An East Derry Elementary School student was found by a passerby Friday, after having exited a school van/bus on which the child had fallen asleep and was “inadvertantly left alone,” said Vance Varner, director of secondary education for Mifflin County School District.

“The student is safe,” Varner said, adding that local police were contacted, the Mifflin County Regional Police Department School Resource Officer responded and transported the student to the school.

“The Mifflin County School District has protocols in place related to ensuring that vans/buses are checked at the end of each student run,” Varner said. “The Mifflin County School District wants to express our gratitude to the passerby who provided assistance.”

Varner said that an investigation is underway, however no further information from MCRPD was available by Friday press time.

The name of the van/bus driver was not released.
