JC board approves sale of elementary

Building sold for $280,000

MIFFLINTOWN — Juniata County School District’s Board of Directors approved the sale of Fayette Elementary School at its regular meeting, Thursday.

The building was sold to the highest bidder, Jeffrey Hoover, for $280,000.

Richard Meily, the district’s business manager, said he would like to see the funds from the sale of the building to be put into the school’s capital reserve fund to pay for projects that were not included in the 2018-19 budget.

The board also authorized administration to seek sealed bids for the sale of Lack-Tuscarora and Thompsontown-Delaware Elementary School buildings for an additional 30 days and to advertise for sealed bids for a period of 30 days for the sale of Tuscarora Valley Elementary School.

Board member Troy Woodward voted in opposition, saying he would like to see the sale of the buildings go to public auction.

In a 5-2 vote, the board also approved an accelerated budget opt out resolution.

Meily said the resolution says the district will not raise taxes past the state index of 3.2 percent.

Board members Woodward and Joseph Shearer voted in opposition.

Also at the meeting, Superintendent Keith Yarger said the district was approved for its $25,000 Safe Schools Grant and is beginning the process to purchase a visitor badge system to be placed in each building.

Yarger said the system would scan visitors’ driver’s licenses and would conduct background checks.
