Houtz Chiropractic Center consolidates in McVeytown

More services, availability for patients

McVEYTOWN – Houtz Chiropractic Center has combined its Mifflintown office into its new location at Body and Soul Community Center in McVeytown.

The new facility allows for additional hours and service offerings.

Dr. Derek Houtz has worked in the chiropractic field for about 20 years.

Houtz said his interest in chiropractic work began after his personal problem with neck and back pain. He attended an appointment at his mother’s insistence.

“What I experienced was incredible,” Houtz said. “I was amazed at how great chiropractic made me feel in a short period of time. It was after this experience that I decided that I wanted to be a chiropractor. I wanted to help people the same way I was helped.”

Houtz grew up in Licking Creek. He graduated from Juniata High School, Shippensburg University and Life University, College of Chiropractic in Georgia.

Houtz was Valedictorian of his class at Life University and completed courses in chiropractic pediatrics and prenatal care. He also achieved a certification as a Fellow of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association.

After Houtz finished his schooling, he was an associate for three years in Mifflintown, and then opened a solo practice in McVeytown. Then, he opened a Mifflintown location, running two offices until the decision was made to consolidate.

Houtz Chiropractic Center focuses on spinal health and wellness for families, athletes, pregnant mothers and pediatric and geriatric patients

“We’ve always tried to implement the latest technology into our chiropractic practice. We perform computerized spinal exams utilizing thermography, surface EMG and heart rate variability,” Houtz explained. “We recently installed a digital x-ray system, that allows us to make accurate measurements and design appropriate care plans for patients. We also utilize the Impulse adjusting instrument, which allows for low force adjustments.”

A patient’s first visit will consist of paperwork and a spinal exam to determine nerve function and muscle tension. If necessary, x-rays will be taken.

The second visit includes discussing the results of the spinal exam and an action plan that will enable patients to maintain good joint health.

After the second visit, repeat visits may only take a few minutes – just long enough for Dr. Houtz to make small adjustments.

“Our chiropractic focus is that the body is self-healing and self-regulating, and interference to the nervous system at the spinal level can affect how the body heals and regulates,” Houtz said. “Chiropractic focuses on removing the interference and allowing the body to function at a higher level. We are grateful to be able to serve the families of Mifflin and Juniata County and surrounding areas with high quality chiropractic care.”
