Board renames stadium for longtime coach

Unanimous vote names football complex Dietrick Field at Klingensmith Stadium

MIFFLINTOWN — A longtime Juniata County School District coach was honored Thursday for dedicating his talents for a half-century.

In a unanimous vote, the board of school directors approved changing the name of the football field complex at Juniata High School to the Dietrick Field at Klingensmith Stadium, after recently retired coach Gary Klingensmith.

The board thanked Klingensmith for his service and Klingensmith — who attended his first board meeting in 50 years — thanked the board for the honor.

“I spent 80 seasons on that field. It means so much to me…thank you from the bottom of my heart. It really means a lot,” Klingensmith said.

A retirement banquet is being held in Klingensmith’s honor at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30 at the Laurel Rock Farm.

In other news, the board of school directors reorganized. In a 9-0 vote, Danny Snyder was approved as board president.

In a 6-3 vote, Amy Wagner was approved as the vice president. Board members Mark Wagner, Troy Woodward and Joseph Shearer voted against the motion.

In a 9-0 vote, the board agreed to establish its regular meetings for 8 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month through 2019, with the exception of July and December. All July meetings will be special meetings, as called by the president. The December 2019 organizational meeting and regular meeting will both be held on Dec. 5, 2019. All meetings will be held at the administrative office building.
