Holiday decorating contests now open


The Mifflin County Garden Club is once again hosting its annual Christmas Decorating Contest for Lewistown residents. This year’s theme will be “A Vintage Christmas.” Judging will take place beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 5.

The judges ask that participants send a brief e-mail to with the address to be judged and name(s) of those participating. Porch lights must be on at the time of judging.


“Winter Wonderland” is the theme for this year’s Reedsville Christmas decorating contest. Judging will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 8.

Winners will be announced at the community tree lighting event slated for 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Dec. 9 at Brown’s Mill Square.

MCHS expo benefits music programs

LEWISTOWN — The 2018 Mifflin County Music Boosters’ Holiday Expo will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at Mifflin County High School, 501 Sixth St., Lewistown.

More than 50 local businesses, vendors and crafters will set up at the expo, and there will be a full concession stand.

Live entertainment featuring The 8TTB Sisters and Student Musicians is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Other features include a silent auction, visits and photos with Mr. & Mrs. Santa, girl’s and boy’s bike giveaway and much more.

Admission and parking are free. Donations will be accepted at the door. All proceeds benefit Mifflin County student music programs.

Historical society changing hours

LEWISTOWN –The Mifflin County Historical Society’s Research Library will close after normal hours on Nov. 14, and will reopen on March 5, 2019.

Weather permitting, the Office will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.each Tuesday and Wednesday. If schools are closed due to inclement weather, the office will also close.


During the Festival of Ice weekend, the McCoy House will be open from 3 to 9 p.m. on Nov. 29 and 30, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 1.

Free senior luncheon slated for Nov. 15

MIFFLINTOWN — The Fifth Annual Senior Citizens’ Fall Luncheon hosted by the Juniata County School District and Metz Culinary Management will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 15 in the Juniata County High School auditorium in Mifflintown.

Mifflintown artist to be featured at show

PAXTANG — The 28th Annual Paxtang Art Association Art Show and Sale, featuring 50 paintings by Mary Brodnick, of Mifflintown, will be held Nov. 16-18 at the Paxtang Firehouse, 3423 Derry St., Paxtang.

The show will include more than 2,000 pieces of original artwork by more than 100 artists.

Show hours are: 10 a.m.-8 p.m., meet the artist reception, 6-8 p.m. Nov. 16; 10 a.m.-8 p.m., visit from Santa, 1-3 p.m., Nov. 17; 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Nov. 18. Admission to the show is free, and free parking is available on site.

Millerstown craft show set for Nov. 17

MILLERSTOWN –The 32nd Annual Holiday Craft Show in Millerstown opens its doors Nov. 17 at Greenwood Elementary School in Millerstown.

At least 100 vendors will set up shop for the day.

The event will be held from 7:45 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Greenwood High School’s musical group, “Out of the Blue” will perform their holiday show on the stage in the large group instruction area at 10 a.m.

The sponsors, Millerstown Community Success, Inc., will sell food throughout the day.

JC Library offering several fall courses

MIFFLINTOWN–The Juniata County Library is offering educational courses this fall in computer and technology.

≤ Learning how to use an iPad, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Nov. 19. There are many things you can swipe, tap and consume while using an iPad. Learn the basics and a few additional features to protect your battery from running low and your privacy from being violated.

Leesa Clark to speak about Motz family

MIDDLEBURG — The Snyder County Historical Society will hold its final program of the year on Nov. 27. The public is invited to attend.

Lessa Clark will speak on the history of the Motz family and cabin.

The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the society meeting room at 30 E. Market St., Middleburg. The room is handicapped accessible.

Festival of Ice seeks

LEWISTOWN — The theme for the 2018 Festival of Ice, which will take place Nov. 29 and 30 in downtown Lewistown, is Toyland.

The Toyland theme will spill out of the courthouse and into the planters that surround Monument Square, as donated toys will be used to create individual “Islands of Misfit Toys.”

The theme will also be carried through in the ice sculpture designs that will line Market and Main streets.

The festival also includes live musical entertainment, craft and vendor booths, food stands, free kids crafts and other activities, as well as special events like the Crazy Parade on Nov. 29 and the Chillin’ 4K Walk/Run on Nov. 30.

Victorian Christmas to benefit society

EAST WATERFORD –A Victorian Christmas Tour and Dinner will be held at the American House in East Waterford on Dec. 1 to benefit the Juniata County Historical Society.

Doors open at 5 p.m., with dinner served at 6 p.m.

Tickets are $50 per person and may be purchased by visiting the Juniata County Historical Society’s Archives Room from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays or 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.Wednesdays, or call (717) 436-5152, (717) 319-4527 or (717) 497-0915 by Nov. for tickets. There is a limit of 40 tickets being sold.
