Mount Union man charged with robbery

Police say 45-year-old attacked woman in her car

MOUNT UNION — A Mount Union man was preliminarily arraigned on Wednesday before Magisterial District Judge Lisa Covert for two felony counts robbery after attacking and taking $100 from a female accuser, count documents indicate.

Documents state that, in August, Jerome L. Owens, 45, came up from behind the accuser’s vehicle on the passenger side and punched the accuser in the face through the passenger side window, while she was stopped the red light on West Shirley Street in Mount Union. The accuser reported Owens reached inside the vehicle and took $100 cash from the passenger seat and took off eastbound on Shirley Street towards Small Street. The accuser reported feeling dazed from the punch and police observed swelling to the accuser’s right cheekbone below the eye.

When asked if she recognized the person who attacked her, the accuser stated she only knew him by his street name “Ro,” which was known as Owens’ street name by police, according to court documents. Owens spoke to police in September and denied the allegations, however the accuser identified Owens as the person that attacked her via a photo line-up, court documents indicate.

Owens was charged Oct. 9 with a total of seven criminal counts, including robbery, assault and theft. Covert set bail at $50,000 and Owens was committed to Huntingdon County Correctional Facility, unable to post bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled on Nov. 7.
