Teach Ag Day

Submitted photo

On Sept. 20, 2018, Juniata FFA traveled to Penn State University for National Teach Ag Day. The chapter took eight students to tour the student farm at Penn State, the Meat Science Laboratory and the Deer and Dairy Research Farms. At the Meat Science Laboratory, they learned about process handling animals before slaughter to ensure animals are not stressed. During the tour, students also saw equipment used for smoking meat and viewed the large coolers. At the PSU Student Farm, members toured the plants beds and irrigation systems and also learned ways to keep the nutrients in the soil. The Deer and Dairy Research Farms showed the students how agriculture is a highly involved in technology. At these farms, the animals are constantly around people that are collecting data on research projects. The farms also showed the members the controlled groups of animals and the experimental groups. The day finished with students listening to a college presentation and students had the chance to interact with faculty and staff in the College of Agriculture Science. Juniata FFA was the only Pennsylvania FFA chapter at the event along with FFA chapters from Michigan and Virginia.
