Reedsville Apple Festival a success

REEDSVILLE — Despite the misting rain and chilled air, many people turned out for the second annual Reedsville Apple Festival on Saturday, buying up all of the apple dumplings and apple moon pies in under two hours.

“This is simply a community event.” said Kay Semler, festival committee chair. “We (just) want to enjoy the company of others,” noting that the four-hour festival, planned by a seven-member committee, is not a fundraising endeavor.

The main attraction was the apple butter, made by “apple butter master” Scott Pecht. Semler said Pecht started preparations at midnight to have three copper kettles of apple butter ready for 10 a.m. By midway through the festival, the pints were gone and quarts were all that people could purchase.

Reedsville United Methodist Church offered apple crisp and sold five out of the eight trays that had been prepared before noon.

“We want to be in community, so it’s exciting to be involved in a community event,” said Pastor Jean Ward.

Other apple treats enjoyed by festival gatherers were apple dumplings from one vendor, apple moon pies from another as well as apples and apple cider from an Amish orchard. Semler said 11 volunteers gathered prior to the event to help “snitz” — thinly slice — many of the apples inside of the treats and all of the foods were prepared by non-profit organizations.

Chelsea Fultz supervised the apple-bobbing and Johnny Appleseed standee area. Fultz said nearly 20 kids bobbed for apples before the festival concluded. Other goodies included funnel cakes, hand-made beaded jewelry, homemade soap, Amish quilts and metal art work. All but two of the vendors were local to Reedsville.

Britini Kibler, of Reedsville, said she really enjoyed the festival.

“It’s cute and something for the kids to do this time of year,” Kibler said.

Semler said this and other community events are what make Reedsville a great place to live.

“We really like our little town,” Semler said.
