Mifflin County Farm Bureau plans for upcoming events, annual meeting

The Mifflin County Farm Bureau met on Aug. 22, 2018. President Tim Goss gave an update on the new member drive beginning in September and the YF&R memberships.

Pam Stern reported that Nationwide now has Grief Counseling Services available to members.

Dave and Jami Glick reported on the upcoming 3rd grade ag tour. There will be 20 stations this year. Presenters, tour guides and other personnel are set. Still working on how to incorporate the ice cream truck in the schedule. The maze will be cut out Friday evening, Sept. 14, 2018, beginning at 7 p.m. Helpers are asked to meet at Dave and Jami Glick’s farm. Anyone who wants to help is welcome.

Mark Ellinger has the “Measure the Candidates” event set for Oct. 25, 2018, at Mifflin County High School, beginning at 7 p.m. Refreshments will follow the event.

Ernie Harrop reported he has three policies so far to be voted on at the annual meeting on Sept. 26, 2018. Anyone who has an idea for a policy can contact him at eaharrop80@gmail.com.

The Women’s Committee report was given by Sonieta Harrop. Both Huntingdon and Mifflin County have Outstanding Woman in Agriculture nominees this year for District 10. These have been judged and the winner’s nomination has been forwarded to the PFB office to be considered for the state OWA award. Both ladies will be honored at their counties’ fall annual meetings.

The State P&E and the County YF&R reports were given by Rebecca Harrop.

In old business, the by-law changes were reviewed and given final approval before being presented at the fall meeting on Sept. 26, where they will be voted on by the members present.

Rebecca Harrop reported that the fair booth won the first prize of $25.00 again this year. A check for $25.00 will be issued from open show. It was decided that the $25.00 will go to YF&R committee as they mostly manned the booth for the week.

Under new business, we finalized the meal for the September meeting, discussed the FFA sponsorship and a request from Pennsylvania Sustainable Ag for farm data.

The nominating committee consisting of Rebecca Harrop, Mark Ellinger and Frank Bonson, was appointed to surface candidates for the director seats vacant or up for election.

Finally, all farm bureau members are encouraged to attend the Mifflin County fall annual meeting on Sept. 26, 2018, at the Milroy Presbyterian Church at 321 S. Main St., Milroy, PA 17063. Menu includes ham and turkey, mashed potatoes, corn green beans with cheese sauce, pineapple pudding, stuffing, cranberry sauce, rolls with butter, assorted desserts, coffee, water and punch. The cost is $15 for adults, $5 for children 6-12, and 5 and under are free. RSVP to (717) 437-5818 by Sept. 19, 2018. PFB President Rick Ebert will be our guest speaker.
