MCHS marching band takes first place award

SHAMOKIN — The Mifflin County High School Marching Band was tops in its class in the 52nd annual Black Diamond Cavalcade of Bands Saturday in Shamokin.

The event, which was hosted by the Shamokin Area Band and Orchestra Boosters and Tournament of Bands, was held at Kemp Memorial Field in Coal Township.

The MCHS Marching Band finished first in Group 3-A Class with a score of 77.19. The band also won the special awards for Best Color Guard, Best Percussion, Best Music and Best Visual. That score puts the band in fourth place overall in the Tournament of Bands’ Group 3-A.

Leading the group is Lake Forest High School, Felton, Del., 79.50; followed by Wayne Hills High School, Wayne, N.J., 77.66; William Penn High School, New Castle, Del., 77.66; Mifflin County; Laurel High School, Laurel, Del., 74.75; and JFK High School, Iselin, N.J., 73.25.

“The band had a great weekend of performances and practice. They have improved so much over the past six weeks,” Director Art Belfiore said. “As was the case last year, 50 percent of the band is in either eighth or ninth grade, so they are an extremely young group. They really raised the bar and took their performance to a new level in Shamokin. The staff, parents and I could not be more proud of them.”

The band will be back in competition next weekend at the Bishop McDevitt Crusade Classic Band Competition in Harrisburg. Tickets for the show can be purchased from Belfiore at MCHS.
