Howard retained as MCHS coach

LEWISTOWN — A week after being presented with a petition from a group of concerned citizens wishing Mifflin County High School Varsity Baseball Coach Bernie Howard be removed, the district’s board of Directors on Thursday unanimously voted to retain Howard along with a group of other spring head sports coaches.

The vote was a 7-0 tally. Board members Robert Hammond and Kristen Sharp were not in attendance.

During the public comment period following the vote, Tish Maclay, the district’s athletic director, stated, “I would like to thank members of the board for their continued support of all of our coaches. I believe they all have the best well-being for our kids.”

When asked if he had any comment, Howard, who was on hand for the meeting, smiled and said, “I’m looking forward to the season.”

Lewistown resident Billie Snook also spoke during the public comment period and stated she feels Howard should not be retained. At that point, Board President E. Terry Styers commented, “Mr. Howard has been retained so that makes this a moot point.”
