Fayette carnival is now underway

MCALISTERVILLE — The Fayette Community Carnival at Lost Creek Community Park in McAlisterville continues until Saturday. This year’s theme is Disney on Parade.

Live nightly entertainment includes:

¯ Today — 7:30 and 9 p.m., Weaver Believers;

¯ Friday — 7, 8:20 and 9:40 p.m., Borderline;

¯ Saturday –7:30, 8:45 and 9:45 p.m., Faces4Radio.

Other features include:

¯ 23rd Annual Vehicle Show, noon to 3 p.m. Saturday on the carnival grounds. Registration is from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and trophies will be awarded from 2 to 2:30 p.m. For more information, call (717) 463-3561.

¯ Chinese auction to benefit the Fayette Fire Co., 6-9 p.m. today; 6-10 p.m. Friday; 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 6-7:45 p.m. Saturday, with the drawing at 8 p.m.

¯ Cash bingo nightly, 50/50 special at 9 p.m. Saturday.

¯ 2nd Annual Fayette Area Lions Den 50/50 Golf Drop, 8 p.m., Saturday. Cost: $3 per ball or two balls for $5.

The main stand carnival menu, which starts serving at 5 p.m., includes: today, ham loaf meal; Friday, pork BBQ rib meal; Saturday, chicken barbecue meal (for chicken tickets call (717) 363-7261, halves $5, available at 11 a.m., dinners, $8, available after parade).

Blacksmithing demo slated at Greenwood

GREENWOOD FURNACE –A demonstration is planned for 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Greenwood Furnace Blacksmith shop when the forge is fired up for some old-fashioned blacksmithing, with volunteer Keith Newlin swinging the hammer.

Those attending will learn about this once essential job in a furnace village, and how the blacksmith, along with the carpenter, built a recently restored charcoal wagon, on display across from the forge.

Local museums list hours for the season

The McCoy House Museum, located at 17 N. Main St., is open for the season from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Tuesday through September.

The Juniata County Historical Society’s Tuscarora Academy Museum is open every Sunday through Aug. 26. Hours are 1:30 to 4 p.m.

Upcoming special events include:

Sunday — Austin Willi will present “Yanks, Rebs, and a Carpet Bagger,” as he highlights the lives of several Academy students, the part they played during the Civil War and the impact their Academy education had on their lives.

Aug. 19 –The American Indian Artifact collectors and flintnapper who were originally scheduled for July 22 have been rescheduled to Aug. 19 due to weather.

Pink Out event to benefit cancer group

PORT ROYAL– The 5th Annual Pink Out Car Show and Benefit Ride will be held Aug. 11 at the Juniata County Fairgrounds. The rain date is Aug. 12.

Registration for the motorcycle ride will be from 9 to 1:45 p.m., and the ride leaves at 2 p.m. The ride will leave from and return to the fairgrounds. Fees are $20 for a single rider, and $25 for a rider and passenger.

Registration for the Car Show is 10 a.m. to noon, and the fee is $10 per vehicle. The show will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Plans call for 40-plus vendors, all day D.J., T-shirts while supplies last, food stands and gift raffle.

All proceeds will be donated to the PA Breast Cancer Coalition

Auditions slated for ‘The Nightmare’

LEWISTOWN — Auditions for the Stone Arch Players production of “The Nightmare” will be held at 7 p.m. on Aug. 13 and 14 at the Theatre in the Park at Kish Park.

There are roles for three males and three females in the show written by Jean Lee Latham and directed by Thiry Olbrich.

In a gloomy old mansion that overhangs a cliff, Perry Wallace waits for the death of his father-in-law. Perry’s haughty, bitter wife, Edith, fights desperately to keep the old man alive. Not because she loves him; just because she hopes she can get him to change his will. Perry knows it leaves everything to the old man’s one grandchild, Marilyn Fleming. But Percy has plans that unfold during the play.

Hillbilly days coming to Beavertown

BEAVERTOWN –Hillbilly Fever Days will be held Aug. 14 to 18 at Possum Hollow Park, 22 S. Sassafras St., Beavertown.

The event is sponsored by the Rescue Hose Company No. 20, Beavertown.

Admission is free, and free parking available.

Vendors will provide clothing, collectibles, tooling and novelties. There will also be carnival food, games, hay rides by Brent Bobb and inflatable obstacle courses for children on the midway.

The schedule includes:

¯ Aug. 14 — Entertainment by Jim Worthing, gospel and patriotic music with shows at 7 and 9 p.m; a message by Pastor Carl Bergerson will start the festivities at 7 p.m.; games and food on the carnival grounds at 5:30 p.m.

¯ Aug. 15 — Entertainment by Joe Bonson & Coffee Run Band, country music with shows at 7 and 9 p.m.; all-you-can-eat ham and beef potpie at 4 p.m. in the air conditioned dining room of the fire company; games and food on the carnival grounds at 5:30 p.m.

¯ Aug. 16 — Entertainment by Memory Lane, oldies music with shows at 7 and 9 p.m.; parade at 6:30 p.m.; no meal at the fire company dining room due to the parade; games and food on the carnival grounds at 5:30 p.m.

¯ Aug. 17 — Entertainment by Sapphire, classic rock and roll music with shows at 7 and 9 p.m.; all-you-can-eat ham and beef potpie at 4 p.m. at the fire company; games and food on the carnival grounds at 5:30 p.m.

¯ Aug. 18 — Entertainment by the Mahoney Brothers, The Beatles & Elvis tribute music with shows at 7 and 9 p.m.; games and food on the carnival grounds at 5 p.m.; drawing for raffle ticket prizes will be held after the last show.

Academy fundraiser slated at winery

MIFFLIN — The Fourth Annual Tuscarora Academy fundraiser will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. on Aug. 18 at the Juniata Valley Winery.

Faces 4 Radio will provide live entertainment. Several food trucks will be on site. Bring a lawn chair or blanket.

Tickets are $10 per person and may be purchased at the Juniata County Library, Juniata County Historical Society Archives office any Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or Wednesday from 10 a.m. to1 p.m., or by calling either (717) 734-0057 or (717) 497-0915. Tickets will also be available as you enter the Winery that evening. There will be food trucks on site.

Performers listed for Brookline concerts

MIFFLINTOWN –Upcoming performers for the Concert on the Lawn series at Brookline Healthcare and Rehabilitation Services, Mifflintown, include:

¯ Aug. 21 — Tussey Mountain Moonshiners;

¯ Sept. 11 — Canaan’s Land Bluegrass.

Concerts are from 6 to 8 p.m. A cover charge of $2 per person will benefit the residents’ Christmas Fund. Concession stands will begin selling food at 5 p.m. Bring a lawn chair.

Thompsontown Fall Fest set for Sept. 22

THOMPSONTOWN –Thompsontown Fall Fest will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 22 at Haldeman Park, near the tennis/basketball court.

Many craft, direct sales and food vendors will be set up. There will be games for children and face painting inside the tennis/basketball court, in addition to a pet parade, paddle wheel and Chinese Auction.

The Juniata County Food Pantry will be there all day taking donations of nonperishable foods, diapers, wipes, laundry detergent, dish detergent, toilet paper and paper towels.

The event will not be held if it rains.

The Fall Fest is sponsored by the Thompsontown Fire Company.
