Man charged with assault after attacking area resident

LEWISTOWN — A 30-year-old man was charged Monday with three counts of assault, two counts aggravated assault and one count simple assault, after attacking a Lewistown resident with a metal pipe, according to court documents.

Late Saturday night, Charles J. Williams, of Lewistown, jumped out of his vehicle in the parking lot of a local convenience store while brandishing a metal pipe, called the accuser a “snitch,” chased the accuser through Lewistown and struck the accuser in the head with the metal pipe, court documents state.

Williams had been interviewed by police earlier in the day as a person of interest allegedly involved in burglarizing the accuser’s residence and stealing a game console. When police advised Williams whose residence he was suspected in burglarizing, police said Williams seemed angry, court documents state.

The accuser told police he suspected Williams attacked him because Williams had been suspended from their mutual place of employment for failing a drug test and that Williams believed the accuser had told management about Williams’ drug use. The accuser was treated at Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital for a gash on his forehead, bruising on his chest and an injured hip, court documents state.

Also according to court documents, the accuser reported seeing a female acquaintance of Williams’ in the passenger seat of the vehicle during the incident. Police interviewed the acquaintance, who advised police she and another friend were visiting in the friend’s residence across from the convenience store when she observed Williams fighting with the accuser. The witness told police she ended up in a scuffle with the accuser while he attempted to run from Williams and that Williams followed the accuser in his vehicle, then parked and pursued the accuser on foot, but she did not witness what happened afterward.

On Sunday, Williams was arrested for three counts intentional possession of a controlled substance by a person not registered and one count possesion of drug paraphernalia, during an investigation of an alleged retail theft, according to court documents. Williams arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Kent Smith and committed to Mifflin County Correctional Facility, unable to post the $20,000 bail set.

Williams was arraigned again before Magisterial District Judge Jack Miller on Monday afternoon, regarding the assault charges. Williams was re-committed to MCCF, unable to post the $50,000 bail set.

A preliminary hearing for both cases is scheduled for today.
