Man charged for stealing, selling equipment

HONEY GROVE–A man from East Waterford was charged Thursday with two counts theft and one count receiving stolen property, all third degree felonies, after unlawfully taking and selling over $8500 in metal equipment, according to court documents.

Codey A. Beward, 24, was reportedly hired in May to look after a residential property in Honey Grove while the owner was away. The accuser told police that, upon his return, he noticed various secondary metals missing from the property, to which a witness related Beward had coordinated the removal.

Police interviewed Beward who admitted to removing and arranging the transport and sale of the metal equipment from the accuser’s property to a local scrap metal company, according to court documents. Beward related he did so because the accuser allegedly would not compensate him after “long hours of employment” with wages Beward considered appropriate and fair, according to court documents.

Police met with the owner of the scrap metal company who provided a receipt of sale on the day of Beward’s visit to the company, according to court documents. Beward reportedly sold 1540 pounds of various metal. Replacement of the stolen equipment is estimated at $8,515.00.

Beward was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Jacqueline Leister on Thursday, who did not set bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 4.
