Board discusses Kish park updates

YEAGERTOWN–The Derry Township Supervisors discussed the inspection of Kish Park during a meeting on Monday night at the Derry Township Municipal Building.

According to Kelly Shutes, township manager, the playground equipment was recently inspected and mulch was added. Additionally, Shutes stated that the conservation district is hoping to begin the stream improvement project this Wednesday, pending the weather. The project was initially slated to begin construction on July 30, however the recent heavy rainfall caused delays. Following discussion, the board approved the park inspection report.

Additionally, the board discussed possible projects for the United Way Day of Caring and approved the donation of 10 mini golf passes for the Burnham Fire Company’s penny bazaar.

In other business, the board:

¯Approved the repair of a John Deere 2755 tractor in the amount of $9,831.88.

¯Approved MCRPD renovation expenses.

¯Approved the release of CDBG funds.

Prior to the regularly scheduled meeting, the board hosted a CDBG public hearing. Lucas Park, of the EADS Group, stated that the Mifflin County Youth Park Board evaluated cost estimates to upgrade the park’s restroom facilities. The board then presented an application to the county for the project that outlined costs of approximately $50,000 in order to update the handicap accessibility, plumbing and general improvements.

“It’s pretty sad when you actually look at the current situation and current state of the bathrooms out there,” said Park.

According to park, the youth park board is looking for the four local municipalities, Lewistown Borough, Burnham Borough, Granville Township and Derry Township, to contribute a fair share toward the project.

Following discussion, the supervisors chose to park funds until they could decide on the best way to move forward.

The Derry Township Supervisors meet at 5:30 p.m. on the first and third Monday of the month at the Derry Township Municipal Building.
