$5 registration fee in Juniata County will not happen

Decision made after poll taken

MIFFLINTOWN – Even though the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is making road and bridge work funds available if counties adopt a $5 fee on all registered vehicles, Juniata County does not intend to participate.

During Tuesday’s weekly meeting of the Juniata County Commissioners, Chairperson Alice Gray announced the county will not take part after polling municipalities to seek their input on whether to adopt an ordinance adding the fee.

“Recently, we had the opportunity to bring in some additional money for bridges and roads,” Gray said. “The county has nothing in this but would have handled administering of the funds. We asked the townships and municipalities to see if they wanted this to be enacted. It was an all or nothing situation.”

Gray said 11 of the 17 entities polled responded to a questionnaire recently sent out.

“It was an overwhelming no,” she reported. “We only had three yes votes and because of that, we will not go forward with the ordinance. If supervisors change their minds in the future, we can always revisit it. So, that’s where we stand.”

In other business Tuesday, the commissioners:

¯ Approved the collective bargaining agreement with the Teamsters Local 776, Juniata County Commissioners Residual Unit, for a new contract effective January 1 of this year and running through December 31, 2020.

¯ Announced there will be no commissioners meeting Tuesday, August 7 due to the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania annual conference.
