Study highlights memorial trail

MCVEYTOWN–The Allegheny Ridge Corporation, in coordination with Huntingdon and Mifflin Counties, hosted a public workshop on Thursday evening at the Body and Soul Community Center in order to present the findings of a trail feasibility study.

Campbell Thomas and Co. and Laird LA conducted the study in order to find the best trail placement for the Main Line Canal Greenway/September 11th National Memorial Trail in the region. The national memorial trail is part of a project that is working to link together memorial sites from the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks including the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the Flight 93 National Memorial. The trail is also being implemented in order to showcase regional landscapes and landmarks.

Bob Thomas, of Campbell Thomas and Co., was present in order to discuss the section of the trail that will lead into Mifflin County. Throughout the meeting, Thomas displayed various maps that outlined possible corridors for the trail in the region. Community members were then given the opportunity to ask questions and share their ideas and concerns for the project.

According to Thomas, between now and September, the results of the study will help lead to design and construction plans for the trail and key work will include finding funds, marketing and determining who will maintain long-term responsibility for the trail.

“When people get out here and really see the beauty and appreciate the area, it actually provides more energy to say, ‘let’s get this permitting thing done,'” said Thomas.
