Juneteenth slated for the 16th of June

HUNTINGDON –The 9th Annual Huntingdon County Juneteenth Celebration is scheduled for noon to 8 p.m. on June 16, at Portstown Park in Huntingdon.

“The celebration this year will be especially poignant as we celebrate the life of Greg Banks,” said Anthony Bullett, who served with Banks as co-chairperson of the event. Banks, who succumbed to cancer last month, conceived this event as a way to bring together families and friends for a joyous gathering. His wish was that his memorial service be held at Juneteenth.

“In keeping with Greg’s wishes and continuing his legacy, his memorial service will not be a time for mourning, but we will celebrate his amazing life and his passage to eternity,” Bullett said.

In addition to the memorial service, the Juneteenth Celebration will feature live music, crafts and information vendors, food and dancing. There will be drawings for cash and prizes throughout the afternoon. Tickets for the drawings may be purchased now from committee members.

Juneteenth originated in Galveston, Texas, in 1865. It is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending in slavery in the United States, marking the day, June 19, 1865, that General Granger and the Union soldiers reached Texas with news of the Emancipation Proclamation — more than two years after it was signed.

The Huntingdon County Juneteenth Celebration welcomes everybody and draws people from throughout the central Pennsylvania region. Attendees to this free event may bring their own picnic lunch or purchase food at the park. The event is funded through the donations of attendees and friends.

For more information, contact the Huntingdon County Juneteenth Celebration Committee at info@HuntingdonCountyJuneteenth.org.
