Habitat seeking applicants

LEWISTOWN — The local Habitat for Humanity chapter is seeking applicants to reside in what will be its 10th Mifflin County home.

Representatives of Habitat for Humanity of Mifflin County spoke to members of the Lewistown Rotary Tuesday during the club’s regular meeting.

According to Mike Spahr, explained that it has become difficult to find qualified applicants to live in the homes due to credit history or income level.

According to the organization’s website, families are applicable if they are unable to obtain adequate housing through conventional means, they meet income requirements, are able to meet mortgage payments and have a willingness to assist in building the home. Applicants must also reside in Mifflin County

Spahr said families of any size can be applicable.

“It can be a family of one or a family of six,” he said. “Habitat doesn’t define what a family is.”

Spahr said Habitat will work with the family to accommodate needs. Currently, they have properties in Derry Township, Strodes Mills and Yeagertown, he said.

The organization is also working with local programs to offer subsidize, he said.

In addition to finding qualified applicants, Jeff Bell, president of Habitat for Humanity of Mifflin County said the chapter is also seeking both financial support and volunteers.

Bell noted that the Mifflin County chapter operates with 100 percent volunteer labor.

“We’re working together to make our community better,” he said.

The organization would like to start its 10th house in March of 2019.
