Pub owners recognized in awareness campaign

Juniata establishments praised for not having any serving violations

MIFFLINTOWN – Several Juniata County taverns and eating establishments were recognized Tuesday during a presentation on alcohol awareness. During the weekly business meeting of the Juniata County Commissioners, Melissa Fausey, coordinator of the Juniata County Prevention Board, recognized some of the local establishments that were recently recognized by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board for having no violations involving selling alcohol to minors during a presentation celebrating Alcohol Awareness Month.

Fausey said the prevention board consists of a coalition of organizations, agencies and concerned individuals that explores issues that affect local youth.

“By far, the number one (issue) is alcohol abuse,” Fausey said. “We’re (the coalition) not about prohibition. We want to recognize those who serve alcohol responsibly. Through our research, we’ve found that 20 percent of 10th to 12th graders use alcohol on a regular basis. And half of them say it’s easy to obtain it. That’s a disturbing statistic, however, we recognize that a lot of businesses are involved in efforts to keep our youth safe. Everyone has a role to play in preventing underage drinking. That is something everyone can do.”

Recognized on Tuesday were Trackside Tavern, Gridiron Pub, and Matt Ezra’s.

Fausey said the prevention board is planning to hold three community roundtable discussion groups in the near future dealing primarily with underage drinking. They include: June 11 at the Port Royal Community Building; June 18 at the Richfield Fire Hall; and June 25 at the Lack-Tuscarora EMS Building in East Waterford. “These are being held to keep people aware of the situation and for the protection of our youth,” she said.

In other business Tuesday, Allen Weaver, emergency services director, announced that Juniata and Perry Counties are now offering text-to-911 services as an additional method of getting in touch with the 911 emergency service centers in case of an emergency. Weaver said in situations where a voice call is impossible or undesirable, texts are now being received.

“This is not meant to replace voice calls,” Weaver said. “This is intended for those who can’t speak or hear or at a time where it may not be safe to make a voice call.”

Weaver said callers should text only when calling is not an option, simply because texting is not always instantaneous and it could take longer to dispatch emergency services.

Also on Tuesday, Cindy Williams of Juniata Valley Bank, was on hand to make a brief presentation on the annual Richard J. and Lela A. Nestler Scholarship Fund, which is now accepting applications for the 2017-18 school year.

Williams said applications are available in the guidance offices of Juniata and East Juniata High Schools. The JVB Trust and Investment Division, and the Juniata County Website. The annual net income from the trust fund, which JVB administers, will be given to two recipients, one each from Juniata and East Juniata, for the purposes of a college education. Students have until May 1 to submit applications to their school’s guidance office. The student with the highest combined Scholastic Aptitude Test (S.A.T.) scores will receive the scholarships. The recipients will have their tuition paid to the extent of funds as available for the academic year following their high school graduation. Last year’s recipients split $4,057.40, Williams reported.

In other business Tuesday, the county’s planning and community development department announced several upcoming bridge closures to accommodate repair work that needs to be completed. They include Milford Township over Licking Creek, closed for replacement due to being structurally deficient; Delaware Township over Delaware Creek, for replacement due to being structurally deficient; Greenwood Township over Crane’s Run, closed due to inspection report identifying structural deficiencies; and Greenwood Township over Crane’s Run, partial closure due to bridge inspection report identifying structural deficiencies.

In other business, the commissioners:

¯ Approved a contract agreement between the county and Plametto Posting Inc. to provide tax notice posting services.

¯ Reminded residents that a delinquent taxpayer notice will be published the week of May 13. In order for delinquent taxpayers to avoid having their names published in the ad, the commissioners said they must have their taxes paid in full by the end of the business day May 11.
